Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) stepdown position requiring a NE or compact license, with expertise in titrating drips and interpreting telemetry.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a 33-bed stepdown Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within an acute care setting
  • Patients include young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex cases including multisystem failure
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4-5
  • Required to titrate IV drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin
  • Use and interpretation of cardiac telemetry strips is required
  • BiPAP and Airvo equipment are utilized on the unit
  • Epic EMR system is used; proficiency is needed
  • 12-hour day shifts (0630-1900), with scheduling managed by the unit
  • Weekend shifts required every other weekend
  • Holiday coverage required as needed
  • Float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care as required
  • Provide comprehensive care for patients with complex, high acuity medical and cardiac needs in a busy, fast-paced PCU environment
  • Frequent admissions and discharges may occur within the same shift
  • A strong sense of teamwork, positive attitude, and commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding are essential for success
  • Charge nurse present on every shift and CNAs available with ratios fluctuating based on census
  • Orientation includes classroom training and two 12-hour floor shifts
  • Scrub color for RNs is navy blue
  • Maximum of 7 days of requested time off (RTO) per 13-week contract; additional time off not permitted
  • Candidates must live at least 50 miles from the facility

Requirements

  • Active NE or compact RN license is required and must be in hand prior to consideration
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience in a stepdown or similar acute care setting
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Proven experience with titration of IV drips and reading/interpreting telemetry
  • Valid driver’s license required to verify residence outside 50 miles from the facility
  • May not have been employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-related facilities within the past year
  • Candidates must comply with fingernail policies prohibiting artificial nails in patient care
  • Must pass a unit-specific open-book skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%
  • References required from a supervisor within the past 12 months and either a peer or supervisor from within the past 3 years
