Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position in an acute care setting, requiring 5 years of experience and a WV or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

• Work in the Med/Surg Float Pool of an acute care hospital environment
• Flexible assignment across multiple units: CCU (10 beds), IMC (30 beds), Med/Surg, Skilled Care, and potentially ED if within skillset
• Patient population includes cardiac, pulmonary, sepsis, diabetes, and other medical diagnoses
• Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by unit: CCU 1:2-3, IMC 1:4-6, Med/Surg 1:5-8, Skilled Care 1:8-10
• Responsible for titrating drips such as heparin in CCU and ED when assigned
• Expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as vents, trachs, BiPAP, CPAP, and Airvo
• Use of Cerner EMR for all charting and documentation
• Monitor tech available 24/7, but RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
• 12-hour rotating day/night shifts or straight shifts (traveler preference), with self-scheduling and every other weekend required
• Assignment notifications provided via text message up to 2 hours before shift
• No on-call or standby requirements
• Will receive 1 day of orientation and an additional day with a preceptor before independent assignments begin
• Nurses are expected to assist with ADLs, vital signs, bathing, feeding, blood sugars, and call light responses
• Navy blue scrubs are required
• Assignment length is 13 weeks with potential exposure to holiday rotation, split between two groups
• Must be flexible with scheduling to help fill staffing gaps
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Previous employees of any WVU Medicine location must have a 2-year break before reapplying as a traveler
• Cumulative employment with WVU facilities as a traveler is limited to one year, after which a 2-year break is required
• Schedule is posted for four weeks at a time, with the expectation of flexibility and filling in as needed

Requirements

• Active WV or compact RN license required
• Minimum 5 years of RN experience in acute care settings
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Experience managing patient ratios from 1:2 to 1:10 across varying acuity levels
• Preferred: at least 1 year of ICU or ED experience
• Multi-functional expertise with strong flexibility, adaptability, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to interpret and print telemetry strips and identify rhythms
• Comfortable titrating critical drips and floating between units
• Must submit a copy of a valid, unexpired driver’s license for consideration
• Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility (radius rule applies)
