Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg position in an Acute Care Unit with night shifts and strong broad med-surg experience required.

Responsibilities

• Work in a 40-bed Acute Care Unit within a Level III Trauma Center
• Primarily manages medically stable adult patients with a variety of conditions including COPD, CHF, CAD, diabetes, dementia, kidney failure, sepsis, and wounds
• Occasional care of post-op ortho and surgical patients; majority of surgical cases are in a separate unit
• Stroke certified unit with Meditech EMR system
• Required to work 12-hour night shifts (1930-0700) with scheduling on a 6-week rotation
• Expected to work 6 weekend shifts per 6 weeks, with weekend nights considered Friday and Saturday
• Floating may be required to the surgical, oncology, or progressive care units for medical overflow with a 1:5 ratio
• Nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:5-6
• Staffing includes 6-8 RNs, 4-6 CNAs, and up to 2 supervisors per shift
• First-time travelers are considered with strong relevant experience
• One day general orientation and a 12-hour unit orientation are provided, including Meditech training and cross-training to the sister surgical unit
• Holiday coverage required for 1-2 holidays during the assignment, determined by shift
• RTO (time off) requests must be approved prior to start and 3x12-hour shifts weekly must be maintained
• Flexible scrub policy; scrubs must be clean and there are no restrictions on hair color, tattoos, or piercings
• Free parking and shuttle provided during winter months
• Support staff includes health unit clerks during the day and a centralized camera monitoring tech
• Bedside shift report, use of room whiteboards, and hourly rounding are standard practice
• Potential for contract extension or conversion to full-time may be available

Requirements

• Active MT or Compact RN license required
• Minimum 1 year of recent and strong med-surg experience
• Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
• Experience with epidural/PCA and medication management, drain and ostomy care, chest tubes, wound care, and general post-surgical recovery
• Ability to use Meditech EMR, Baxter IV Pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, and Voalte communication devices
• Must be able to participate in bedside shift reporting and effective team communication
