Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a stepdown intermediate care unit night shift, requiring a WV or compact RN license and advanced cardiac certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Position is in an acute care IMU (Intermediate Care Unit) with a 30-bed stepdown environment
  • Patient population includes chest pain, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post caths, groin checks, Tikosyn therapy, and other intermediate acuity cases
  • Staff to patient ratios typically 1:5, may range 1:4 to 1:6 based on unit needs
  • 12-hour night shifts (7pm to 7am), must be on unit and ready by 6:45pm
  • Weekends are Friday through Sunday with four weekend night shifts required per four-week schedule
  • All staff expected to float as needed to Tele or MedSurg, with patient ratios up to 1:6 (up to 1:7 in MedSurg rarely)
  • Tele monitoring via Nihon Kohden; tele techs available but RNs must interpret own strips
  • Required to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • Allscripts/Sunrise EMR used on unit
  • First two days include orientation with HR and preceptor before independent assignment
  • Must wear navy blue scrubs (top, bottom, and jacket) with no hoodies allowed
  • IV team handles all IV starts and PICC/midline insertions; respiratory therapy manages all vents and respiratory equipment
  • Hospitalist and Intensivist in-house 24/7 for support, with residents available
  • Pharmacy and RT available in-house 24/7; Pyxis system used for medication
  • Self-scheduling is available with a maximum of four requested days off per month
  • Flexibility to work holidays may be required as perm staff typically cover most holidays
  • Pass/fail EKG testing may be required for consideration on stepdown units
  • Previous WVU Medicine employees must not have worked within the system for the past 2 years to be eligible
  • Travelers may not work longer than 1 cumulative year at WVU facilities and must take a 2-year break before returning

Requirements

  • Active WV or compact RN license required
  • Minimum of 2 years stepdown, IMU, or related acute care nursing experience
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Ability to interpret cardiac strips and titrate critical cardiac drips
  • Must be able to work within stepdown, telemetry, and med-surg environments as needed
  • Candidates must live at least 50 miles from the facility (radius rule applies)
  • Must provide copy of unexpired driver’s license for consideration
