Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring NIHSS certification, a NM or compact RN license, and hospital telemetry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a hospital Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a patient census exceeding eighteen beds
  • Primarily day shifts with occasional nights; shifts are 12 hours, and day/night rotations are not scheduled back-to-back
  • Weekend work as needed
  • On-call required for 12 hours every four weeks
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:7
  • Patient population includes medically complex individuals in a long-term stay setting and Med/Surg level patients without direct ICU escalation
  • Floating required between departments and to local locations within a 20-mile radius
  • Epic EMR used (experience preferred)
  • No charge responsibilities or precepting duties
  • Provide direct nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting patient needs and care provided
  • Administer medications and treatments per physician orders and established protocols
  • Coordinate care and communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team
  • Supervise LPNs and assistive staff as assigned
  • Identify and address patient and family discharge needs and education throughout the episode of care
  • Recognize, de-escalate, and respond appropriately to deteriorating patient conditions
  • Testing for BCA will be completed on orientation day; failure of the BCA test twice results in termination
  • Holiday coverage may be required
  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this assignment

Requirements

  • Active RN license for New Mexico or Compact State, currently in hand
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) required
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications from AHA, American Health and Safety, or Red Cross
  • Current NIHSS certification required
  • Minimum two years of recent experience in an 18+ bed telemetry or progressive care unit
  • Successful completion of at least one previous 13-week travel assignment
  • Must pass an onsite Basic Cardiac Arrhythmia (BCA) test during orientation; one retest is allowed if failed the first time
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing clinical settings and patient needs
  • Teamwork skills required for fast-paced environments
  • No local candidates allowed; must live at least 50 miles from the facility
  • Return travelers must wait one year since last permanent employment with the health system for consideration
