Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a high acuity Telemetry position in an acute care setting, requiring a CA RN license and strong cardiac monitoring skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a 34-bed Telemetry unit on the 4th floor of an acute care hospital
  • Patient population includes post-CVA, CHF, respiratory failure, diabetes, hypertension, post-op, some post cardiac cath/PCI (travelers not assigned cath/PCI patients)
  • Patient ratio of 1:4 on high acuity, PCU/stepdown-level unit
  • Use of telemetry monitoring equipment (GE) with monitors on the unit; nurses must be able to read and interpret their own strips
  • Vents include BiPAP; no insulin drips, non-titratable drips except heparin
  • Shift is 12-hour days, with required coverage of 2 weekends every 4 weeks and 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Cerner EMR in use; Cerner experience preferred but not required
  • Hospitalist, RT, and pharmacy coverage is 24/7; charge nurse present on each shift (typically without patient assignment)
  • Floating to med/surg required, with travelers floating first
  • No on-call requirement
  • Primary responsibilities include comprehensive cardiac and stepdown care for high acuity patients
  • Nurse aides are present but not guaranteed every shift; nurses may provide primary nursing as needed
  • Unit is stroke certified and sees a diverse range of cardiac and medical patients
  • Standard hospital navy scrubs required
  • Orientation provided: 2 shifts for Cerner-experienced nurses, 3 shifts if no Cerner experience
  • Testing on dysrhythmia recognition (Relias) and sterile technique required during orientation
  • Failure of Relias or sterile technique tests after two attempts results in ineligibility for 6 months at CommonSpirit facilities in the region
  • Holiday coverage matches that of core staff, with at least one major and two minor holidays required
  • Travelers may be scheduled for extra shifts as available; block or set scheduling is not accommodated

Requirements

  • Active CA RN license required at time of consideration; pending license not accepted
  • Minimum of 2 years telemetry or related acute care experience required
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS required
  • Must provide two professional references: one supervisor from within the last 12 months, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years
  • Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips is essential
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration
  • Must not have been employed in a permanent, per diem, or PRN capacity at any CommonSpirit facility in the past 12 months
  • Must not hold a second job and must prioritize travel assignment schedule
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
