Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro Med-Surg Acute position requiring IL licensure, previous neuro unit and travel experience, and BLS/NIHSS certification.

Responsibilities

• Position is in a Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit within an acute care setting
• 54-bed unit with 2 semi-private rooms
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: Days 1:4-5, Nights 1:5-6
• Common patient diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience conditions, plus some medical overflow
• RNs are required to titrate heparin drips based on PTT
• High flow oxygen used rarely for stable COVID patients
• Uses Epic EMR; Epic experience is preferred
• Phillips telemetry monitors used, but RNs are not required to read their own strips
• 12-hour shifts are scheduled with every other weekend and every other holiday required
• Floating occurs in rotation with staff, with assignments appropriate to competencies
• No on-call or standby requirements
• Unit has 24/7 charge nurse and house supervisor support, with unassigned leadership unless ratios require
• Nurse aides/patient care techs provide support with dedicated day, evening, and night coverage
• No specific scrub color is required, but tattoos must be covered and only ear piercings are allowed while on duty
• Two days of unit-specific orientation provided, including computer training and preceptorship
• Holiday coverage is required every other holiday
• COVID vaccination is not required for this assignment
• Local candidates are accepted with differential rates for those within 50 miles

Requirements

• Active IL RN license required at time of consideration
• Minimum 1 year of acute RN experience
• BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required and active at time of consideration
• Experience in a level 1 trauma center required
• Previous dedicated neuro unit experience required
• Prior travel nursing experience required (first-time travelers not eligible)
• Heparin drip titration experience based on PTT required
