Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for Med/Surg units with night shifts and trauma or Med/Surg experience at a Level II Trauma Center.

Responsibilities

  • Position available across a variety of Med/Surg units, including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Oncology, Orthopedics, and Clinical Decision Unit
  • Hospital setting with a Level II Trauma Center and Level III NICU
  • Patient populations include general surgery, trauma, ortho/spine, neuro, oncology, urology, and general Med/Surg cases
  • Patient ratios typically 1:5-6, varying by unit
  • Specialized equipment includes IV pumps (Plum 360), Omnicell medication dispensing, Spacelabs monitors, and tele monitoring by techs with RNs required to interpret strips
  • Electronic Medical Record: Cerner (preferred)
  • Scheduled for 12-hour night shifts, 7:00pm-7:00am, with a 4-week schedule cycle
  • Required to work every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating among like units as per hospital policy
  • Daily duties include caring for diverse Med/Surg populations such as surgical, trauma, neuro, palliative and oncology patients
  • RNs are responsible for interpreting telemetry strips every 4 hours even when monitored by telemetry techs
  • Support provided by CNAs, a charge nurse, IV/VAT team, phlebotomy, hospitalist teams, and HUC/receptionists
  • A comprehensive orientation is provided, with 24 hours of classroom and 24 hours of unit time for new or returning travelers absent over 1 year
  • First-time travelers are accepted with required experience
  • Scrub color is flexible and can be any color
  • Holiday scheduling requires working at least one major and one minor holiday; approved time off excludes blackout dates
  • Local candidates within a 60-mile radius are not eligible

Requirements

  • Active AL or compact RN license in hand
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months recent Med/Surg nursing experience required
  • At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for trauma/surgical units
  • Strong skills in wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, medication administration, patient assessment, and telemetry strip interpretation
  • Experience with Cerner EMR preferred
  • Must be able to provide references from a charge nurse or higher within the past 12 months
  • Perm staff must be gone for at least 6 months before returning as a traveler
