Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced Med/Surg RN for day shifts at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL with floating and weekend rotation requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a hospital setting across various Med/Surg units including trauma surgical, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedics, urology, and clinical decision
  • Units feature patient ratios between 1:5 and 1:6 depending on location and acuity
  • Patient populations include general surgery, vascular, trauma, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedics, urology, and general Med/Surg cases
  • Day shift is 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on a 4 week scheduling cycle
  • Weekend rotation is every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • Floating required to like-units or Med/Surg holding areas as needed
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Use of Cerner EMR (preferred), Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm telemetry strips every 4 hours
  • Provide comprehensive care to diverse Med/Surg patient populations including trauma, surgery, neuro, ortho, oncology, and urology
  • Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • Orientation includes 24 hours classroom and 24 hours on-unit for new or returning travelers absent 1+ years, with adjustments for recent staff
  • Supported by CNA, charge nurse, phlebotomy and IV/VAT teams, receptionist/HUC, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring tech staff
  • Chemo administration experience is highly preferred for oncology units
  • Must comply with hospital protocols for fall prevention, infection control, restraint use, and clinical documentation
  • Scrubs may be any color
  • Parking is provided in the deck (levels 2-4)
  • One major and one minor holiday coverage required per policy, with blackout dates for RTO around major holidays
  • First-time travelers are accepted with at least 18 months Med/Surg experience

Requirements

  • Active AL or compact RN license
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications
  • Minimum 18 months recent Med/Surg experience required
  • At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience needed for trauma surgical unit
  • Competency in wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, medication administration and documentation, and patient escalations
  • Experience with trach care, central line care, PEG tubes, foleys, PCA pumps, drains, and telemetry strip interpretation as unit requires
  • Cerner EMR experience preferred
  • Must not be a local resident within a 60 mile radius of the facility
  • Previous staff must have been gone at least 6 months from last shift to be eligible
