Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring strong drip and telemetry experience and an active NC or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a hospital-based Progressive Care Unit (PCU) that functions similarly to an ICU
  • Patient population includes adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients with complex conditions such as respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, and surgical cases
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3-4
  • Unit has 20 beds with an average daily census of 18
  • Specialized procedures include titrating vasoactive drips and management of arterial lines
  • Common drips used include Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Neo
  • Uses bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup; no ventilators on the unit
  • Equipment includes A-lines, BIPAP, chest tubes, and tracheostomy supplies
  • EMR is Epic; medication management system is Pyxis
  • Night shift position with 3x12 hour shifts, 18:45–7:15
  • Weekend shifts are required every other weekend
  • Floating required to sister ICCU unit as needed
  • No block scheduling is permitted
  • Responsible for comprehensive care of high-acuity stepdown patients including rapid response and post-op surgical cases
  • Unit handles only one pressor drip per patient; patients requiring more are transferred to ICU
  • Nurses are required to adhere to strict isolation precautions and advanced nursing protocols
  • Hospital orientation is provided during the first week and attendance at daily classes is required
  • Navy, white, or a combination of navy and white scrubs are required
  • First-time travelers are accepted for this position
  • Maximum of 7 days of requested time off (RTO) permitted; RTO after booking is not allowed
  • No block scheduling available

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Minimum 2 years of PCU, DOU, IMC, or stepdown nursing experience
  • Must have experience with arterial lines, titrating vasoactive drips, and management of dysrhythmias
  • Certifications required: ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Experience with telemetry, rapid response teams, IV insulin protocols, blood product administration, central and peripheral line management, PICC line management, heparin protocols, conscious sedation, CVA, and various airway management approaches
  • Ability to recognize and treat dysrhythmias is essential
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to starting the assignment
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
