Job Description

American Traveler seeks a BSN-prepared RN with at least 2 years of Med/Surg experience and EPIC proficiency for a night shift position on a busy medical-surgical unit.

Responsibilities

  • Position is based on the 5th floor Medical-Surgical unit in an acute care hospital setting
  • Unit has 42 beds with a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5, with occasional 1:6 assignments
  • Handles a diverse patient population including post-op ortho, spine, urology, general surgery, GYN and medical overflow cases such as COPD, sepsis, infections, and some behavioral health
  • Uses EPIC for charting and EMR; EPIC experience is required
  • Night shifts are 12 hours (7:00 pm - 7:30 am), with scheduling determined by the facility
  • Weekend coverage requires 5 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Must float between MedSurg 5, MedSurg 6, a 9-bed overflow unit, and potentially to similar units at other nearby campuses or to the ER for holds
  • CPAP, BiPAP, high flow oxygen equipment used (RT managed); RNs responsible for reading and interpreting own telemetry strips as virtual techs are used
  • Transitioning from SpaceLab to Philips monitoring systems by end of June
  • No blocked scheduling available and call is not required
  • Nurses receive 3 days of general orientation including EPIC and educator meetings plus 2 shifts on the unit with a preceptor
  • Charge nurse is present every shift and may assist with patient care if needed; day shift has additional nurse support for admits and discharges
  • Nurse aides or patient care techs support at a ratio of 1:8
  • Some titratable or set-rate drips such as heparin and PCAs are managed, but nurses are not required to titrate
  • Scrubs in any color are acceptable as long as they are clean and professional
  • Holiday coverage may be required based on staffing needs
  • Returning employees must have separated from permanent employment at the facility for at least one year prior to applying for a travel assignment
  • Position does not accept first-time travelers

Requirements

  • Active ID or compact state RN license required at time of consideration
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Minimum of 2 years recent Med/Surg experience required
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting EKG/telemetry strips is essential
  • Current BLS certification and EKG certification required
  • EPIC experience required
  • Ability to precept new travelers and students as needed
  • Must provide 2 professional references: one supervisor reference from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years, including employment dates and rehire eligibility
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility (no local candidates within 50 miles)
