Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a night shift Med/Surg Float Pool position requiring 5 years of nursing experience and a WV or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

• Work in a hospital acute care setting as part of the Med/Surg Float Pool
• Float to multiple units of varying acuity, including CCU, IMC, Med/Surg, Skilled Care, and ED (as skillset allows)
• Typical patient population includes cases such as NSTEMI, pneumonia, sepsis, diabetes, heart disease, and diverticulitis
• Patient ratios vary by unit: CCU 1:2-3; IMC 1:4-6; Med/Surg 1:5-8; Skilled Care 1:8-10
• Night shifts, 12 hours, with every other weekend required
• Self-scheduling is used, but schedule is finalized to balance staffing needs
• EMR used is Cerner
• May float to ED or CCU only within demonstrated skillset
• No call or standby requirements
• Primary duties include direct patient care, ADLs, vital signs, blood sugar checks, and troubleshooting respiratory equipment
• Charge nurse is present on each shift and may take an assignment as needed
• Monitor tech support is available 24/7, but RNs must independently interpret telemetry and perform rhythm identification
• One day of general orientation and one day with a preceptor will be provided; additional unit-specific orientation is minimal
• Navy blue scrubs are required
• Holiday rotation is expected, with assignments split between groups
• Assignments and unit locations are communicated via text message within two hours prior to each shift
• Must pass EKG testing if assigned to PCU, ICU, or Stepdown units at specific locations
• Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one year consecutively and must take a two-year break before returning

Requirements

• Active WV or compact RN license is required
• Minimum 5 years of RN experience
• BLS and ACLS certifications are required, including ability to titrate and manage critical drips in ED or CCU
• Must be comfortable with a range of patient ratios (1:2–10) and working in units of varying acuity
• Experience reading and interpreting telemetry strips and managing basic respiratory equipment
• Preferred: at least 1 year of ICU or ED experience
• Must live at least 50 miles from the facility; no local travelers allowed
• Previous employment at any WVU Medicine location requires a 2-year break before eligibility
