Job Description

American Traveler is seeking a BSN-prepared RN with at least 2 years of Med/Surg and Epic experience for a night shift position on a medical-surgical floor.

Responsibilities

  • Work in an acute care hospital on the 6th floor Med/Surg unit with 42 beds
  • Patient population includes a variety of medical cases, some surgical overflow, respiratory, GI, and behavioral health patients
  • Nurse to patient ratio is typically 1:5, with rare instances of 1:6
  • RNs manage telemetry monitoring and must read and interpret strips themselves
  • Uses Epic for charting and EMR, experience required
  • Shift is nights, three 12-hour shifts per week (7:00 pm – 7:30 am), with scheduling done by the unit scheduler and no block scheduling allowed
  • Required to work 5 weekend shifts in a 6-week period, with potential for holiday shifts as needed
  • Floating is required between Med/Surg units, overflow unit, and occasionally to nearby facilities or the ER for patient holds or 1:1 assignments
  • Orientation consists of three days including Epic training, plus two unit precepted shifts
  • The unit has charge nurses on every shift and nurse aides/patient care techs
  • Common equipment includes CPAP and BiPAP, managed by RT, with transition to Philips monitoring systems planned
  • No requirement to titrate drips, but set rate drips such as heparin, PCA, and morphine are used
  • Scrub attire must be clean and professional, any color permitted
  • Orientation includes general hospital, Epic, and unit-specific onboarding, plus online modules prior to start
  • Permanent former employees must wait a year before reapplying as a traveler
  • First-time travelers are not restricted from applying

Requirements

  • Active ID or compact RN license, not pending at time of consideration
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Minimum of 2 years recent Med/Surg nursing experience
  • BLS certification required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Ability to independently read and interpret telemetry strips
  • Must be willing to precept students or new travelers if needed
  • Must reside outside a 50-mile radius from the facility (no local candidates accepted)
  • Driver’s license required for consideration
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor reference from the past 12 months and a second peer or supervisor reference from the past 3 years
