Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with telemetry skills and the ability to manage higher acuity patients.

Responsibilities

• Position is in a hospital-based PCU with a mixed acuity of PCU and Med-Surg/Telemetry patients
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5, with the possibility of 1:6 in extreme situations
• Unit consists of 48 beds and often manages patients requiring telemetry, ventilators (chronic trach/vent), CPAP/BiPAP, and chest tubes
• Patient population includes COPD, pneumonia, respiratory distress, COVID-19, flu, and pulmonary embolisms
• 12-hour day shifts (6:45-19:15), with block scheduling possible based on unit needs
• Weekend requirement is 4 shifts in 6 weeks, with potential for more based on staffing
• Required to float to similar units as needed
• Unit utilizes Epic, Pyxis, and SBAR systems; Epic experience preferred but not required
• Unit provides strong support with team leads, respiratory therapists, vascular access, and behavioral health teams
• Unit orientation is 24 hours
• Responsible for managing PCU/telemetry patients with high acuity and multiple comorbidities
• No more than one vent patient assigned per nurse
• Care for COVID-19 positive patients is required
• Resources available include admission/discharge nurse, assistant nurse manager, vascular access team, RRT, and code team
• White or navy blue scrubs required and not provided
• RTO capped at 7 days for consideration; no additional RTO allowed after booking
• Not having RTO after booking may result in contract cancellation or DNR status
• Unit welcomes local travelers at the same rate

Requirements

• Active NC or compact state RN license
• Minimum of 2 years RN experience required
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Experience with IV starts, vents, telemetry, CPAP/BiPAP, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management required
• Must pass EKG testing prior to start
• NIHSS certification preferred
• First-time travelers accepted
