Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, with multiple unit assignments and Cerner EMR experience preferred.

Details

• 12-hour day shifts starting at 7:00 AM, with 36 or 48 hours per week
• Large 492-bed hospital setting designated as a Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
• Float pool position — nurses are assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation and may float to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)
• Possible unit assignments include: 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North Med/Surg Oncology, 4 South Clinical Decision Unit, 3 South Orthopedics, and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
• Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
• Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular surgery, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, palliative care, orthopedics, urology, and general med/surg
• Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours
• Every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month required
• No on-call requirements
• EMR: Cerner (preferred)
• IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs

Requirements

• Active AL RN license or a valid Compact RN license required
• Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum 18 months of med/surg experience required
• At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for the 6 North Trauma Surgical unit
• Core clinical skills required vary by unit and include wound care, chest tubes, trach care, NGT, PEG tubes, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, foley care, ostomy/colostomy care, C-collar, abdominal binders, restraints, PCA pumps, wound vacs, CVL dressing changes, and pressure ulcer management
• Chemo administration experience highly preferred for the 5 North Med/Surg Oncology unit (chemo certification required to administer)
• Cerner EMR experience required; Epic experience also acceptable
• Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position

Additional Information

• First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of med/surg experience and Epic or Cerner experience
• Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
• New travelers to the facility or those who have been away for 1 or more years will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation
• Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, glucose checks), charge nurses (rarely takes assignment), HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
• Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed in advance of arrival
• Extensive RTO blackout dates are in effect throughout 2025, including MLK Day, Valentine's Day week, the entire month of March, Easter weekend, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day week, Father's Day weekend, July 4th week, Labor Day weekend, Halloween week, Thanksgiving week, and Christmas through New Year's
• Any scrub color is acceptable
• Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
• A reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months is required for consideration
