Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position specializing in neuro patient care, requiring at least 2 years of experience including 1 year of direct Med/Surg, and a minimum of 2 completed travel contracts.
Responsibilities
- Inpatient Med/Surg Tele unit with a 42-bed daily census and 43 rooms
- Primary patient population includes stroke, neurosurgery, epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and other neuro diagnoses
- Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU); traveler training for EMU is available but not typically required
- Patient ratio of 1:6
- 12-hour day shifts (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM), available as 36 or 48 hours per week
- Every other weekend shift required
- Floating required to other Med/Surg Tele areas, which may include COVID care units; frequent floating is possible
- EMR: Epic (experience required); also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework
- 36-hour unit orientation provided
- Navy scrubs required
- EKG testing must be passed prior to start
- Candidates must complete all required lab and testing within 48 hours of signing
- Online modules must be completed prior to start (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles) and are completed annually; modules are non-billable
- RTO is not permitted after booking and cannot be arranged onsite; call-offs or unapproved RTO may result in contract cancellation
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval
- Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays; no RTO permitted during the first week of assignment (orientation)
- If RTO includes weekends, time will be added to the end of the contract to make up those dates; missed weekend shifts must be made up based on unit needs
- Missed shifts are expected to be made up within the same week or at the end of the contract
- Candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility will be offered a local pay rate
- Any previous permanent, PRN, or EP staff employee of this health system must wait 12 months before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required before any offer can be extended
- Current travel Per Diem clinicians at this health system are ineligible for travel assignments; clinicians must choose one or the other
- Two manager or supervisor references from within the past 12 months are highly preferred; references must be in hand at time of start
- Travel pairs are allowed but must be submitted for and assigned to different units
Requirements
- Active RN license — NC or Compact license required in hand at time of start
- Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of total experience, including at least 1 year of direct Med/Surg (MS, not MS/Tele) experience in work history — hard stop
- Remaining experience may be a combination of Med/Surg, MS/Tele, Tele, or PCU
- Minimum of 2 successfully completed travel contracts required — hard stop; first-time travelers will not be accepted
- Epic charting experience required
- Proficiency in IV insertion, telemetry monitoring, and interpretation and management of dysrhythmias required
- Med/Surg neuro experience required
- Comfortable with floating to other units or affiliate hospitals with no restrictions or special requests
