Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med Surg ICU position at a Level 1 Trauma Center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience and active NE or Compact RN license.

Responsibilities

• Acute care setting in a Med Surg ICU at a Level 1 Trauma Center serving as the primary tertiary hospital for the system
• 34-bed unit serving adult and pediatric patients (15 years and older)
• Patient population includes neurological surgery, respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure, general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, and cancer-specific surgeries
• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1–2 in ICU, 1:4–5 in PCU, and 1:5–6 in MS
• RNs are required to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
• Experience with CVPs, A-lines, Swans, EV-1000, ICP monitoring, CRRT, Impella, balloon pump, and Zoll Thermoguard helpful but not required — on-the-job training available
• Respiratory support ranges from nasal cannula to mechanical ventilation
• Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry — RNs must be able to independently read and interpret cardiac rhythms
• EMR: Epic
• 12-hour night shifts (1830–0630)
• Schedule is manager-assigned based on unit needs
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday coverage required for 2 out of 3 major holidays, or every other, based on unit needs
• Floating required to all inpatient units, excluding Maternity/NICU
• Unit orientation consists of 2 department-specific shifts, plus a pass/fail open-book exam administered on the Friday of orientation week — a score of 90% or higher is required to pass
• Charge nurse is present on each shift, attends rapid response teams (RRTs) and codes, and does not take a patient assignment
• Nurse aides/patient care techs are available at a 1:18 ratio
• Scrub color: Navy Blue
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas — refusal to remove nails will result to contract termination
• Fast-paced, high-volume environment with a collaborative team including attendings, fellows, and residents
• RTO must be requested upfront — 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved

Requirements

• Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license required — pending licenses not accepted
• Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required
• Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — all must be active; pending certifications not accepted
• Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address)
• Candidates may not be currently or recently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
• Driver's license required for consideration
