Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PICU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1.5 years of PICU experience and the ability to work across both General Pediatrics and PICU units on 12-hour night shifts.

Responsibilities

  • 15-bed General Pediatrics unit and 5-bed PICU within a hospital setting
  • Patients range from 0–18 years of age, with adult overflow on the General Pediatrics side (stable medical patients such as post-appendectomy, post-cholecystectomy, cellulitis, etc.)
  • General Pediatrics diagnoses include respiratory illness, diabetes, septicemia, cellulitis, hyperbilirubinemia, neglect/abuse, mental health, trauma, neurology, and general surgeries (ENT, GI, urology, orthopedics, neurosurgery)
  • PICU patients require critical or intensive care for conditions including acute/chronic respiratory insufficiency, circulatory failure, infectious diseases, endocrine/metabolic disorders, neurologic diseases, toxic ingestions, trauma, and hematologic/oncologic disease
  • Patient ratios: General Pediatrics 1:5; PICU 1:1–2
  • 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • All holidays require coverage
  • May be placed on low census/on-call
  • Time off requires pre-approval
  • Charting via Epic; Omnicell medication dispensing system used
  • Floating may occur to NICU (feeder/growers, 1:3 ratio) and General Pediatrics (up to 1:5 ratio)
  • First-time travelers are considered only if they have more than 2 years of PICU experience
  • Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:5), a free-floating charge nurse covering both units, respiratory therapy, hospitalists with Pediatric APP support, Pediatric Pharmacy, Pediatric Social Work, and Case Management
  • RNs and Nurse Aides are responsible for drawing their own labs and starting their own IVs
  • Orientation consists of 1 day of facility orientation (online and in-person) followed by 2 days of unit orientation with a preceptor
  • Navy scrubs required
  • Free parking available in an on-site parking garage

Requirements

  • Active RN license — South Dakota or Compact state license required
  • Required certifications: BLS, PALS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1.5 years of PICU RN experience required
  • Completion of a board of nursing-approved nursing education program
  • Proficiency with Epic charting system
  • Ability to perform physical assessments on patients ages 0 through adult
  • Experience titrating drips and caring for mechanically ventilated patients
  • Ability to start IVs independently (ultrasound guidance available for difficult access)
  • Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration
