Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a mixed ICU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience, Epic proficiency, and TNCC certification.

Responsibilities

  • Hospital-based mixed ICU setting with 39 beds, divided into pods: MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU
  • Complex patient population including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma diagnoses such as ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, and multi-system trauma
  • Cardiac experience is preferred, including CABG/TAVR 24–48 hrs post-op; fresh open heart cases are assigned to permanent staff only
  • Patient ratios are 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 (rare), based on acuity
  • Charting system: Epic (required); Alaris pumps (transitioning to Baxter); Omnicell for medication dispensing
  • 12-hour day shifts at 48 hours per week
  • Every-other-weekend rotation (not guaranteed)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating to adult floors, including Med/Surg and Telemetry at a 1:4 ratio, is uncommon but possible if overstaffed
  • Unit support includes 1–2 CNAs per unit plus a mobility float aide, 2 charge RNs overseeing all ICUs, a resource nurse (staffing dependent), 24/7 respiratory therapy, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, and intensivist/APP physician coverage around the clock
  • ICU charge RNs place all midlines; no dedicated IV/VAT team
  • Orientation consists of a hospital orientation, one 12-hour shift, and one 8-hour shift on the ICU
  • May be expected to precept nursing students
  • No RTO during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August annually)
  • Up to 7 days of time off may be approved, with the requirement to extend the contract to complete a full 13-week assignment
  • Required scrub color: Navy
  • Free parking is available on-site
  • Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning to this facility as a traveler

Requirements

  • Active RN license issued by or valid in South Dakota (SD or Compact license required)
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC (TNCC must be obtained prior to start)
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel experience, is strongly preferred; candidates with at least 1.5 years of ICU experience (excluding travel) plus significant non-ICU RN experience may be considered
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Experience with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics
  • Experience with hemodynamic lines, ventilator management, proning, and telemetry monitoring
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT strongly preferred
  • Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
  • At least one prior travel assignment required; first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Two professional references dated within the past year are required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration
