Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a 13-week night shift contract in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1.5–2 years of ICU experience and Epic proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Mixed ICU environment consisting of MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU pods within a 39-bed unit
  • Complex patient population including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma cases with diagnoses such as ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, and multi-system trauma
  • Cardiac experience (CABG/TAVR, 24–48 hrs post-op) is preferred but not required; fresh open heart cases are not assigned to travelers without verified experience
  • Patient ratios are 1:1 or 1:2, with 1:3 occurring rarely and based on acuity
  • Charting is done in Epic (required), with Alaris pumps (transitioning to Baxter) and Omnicell
  • 12-hour night shifts, 48 hours per week
  • Every-other-weekend rotation is the target schedule
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating to adult floors including Med-Surg/Tele (1:4 ratio) is possible but uncommon and only occurs when overstaffed
  • Unit support includes 1–2 CNAs per unit plus a mobility float aide, 2 Charge RNs overseeing all ICUs, a Resource Nurse (staffing dependent), Respiratory Therapy available 24/7, and a physician team of 3 Intensivists on days and 2 on nights plus an APP overnight
  • Orientation consists of a hospital orientation session, one 12-hour shift, and one 8-hour shift on the ICU
  • May be expected to precept nursing students
  • Navy scrubs required
  • No RTO approved during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
  • RTO of up to 7 days may be approved, but the assignment must be extended to complete a full 13-week contract
  • Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning to this facility as a traveler
  • Free parking is available on-site

Requirements

  • Active RN license in South Dakota or a Compact state license valid in SD
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC (must be obtained prior to start if not already held)
  • Minimum of 1.5–2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel experience; candidates with 1.5 years ICU experience plus significant RN experience outside of ICU may be considered
  • At least one prior travel assignment required; first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Proficiency with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics
  • Experience with hemodynamic lines, ventilator management, proning, and telemetry monitoring
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT strongly preferred
  • Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
  • 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration
