Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Cardiovascular Surgical ICU (CSICU) position in Sacramento, CA, requiring a CA RN license, cardiovascular critical care experience, and the ability to read and interpret EKG strips.
Responsibilities
- Acute care hospital setting in a 20-bed Cardiovascular Surgical ICU (CSICU)
- Patient population includes pre- and post-op CABG (goal extubation within 6 hours), LVADs, Impellas, IABP, TAVRs, CRRT (Next Stage), and patients on critical drips and Swan monitoring
- Patient ratios: 1:1–2
- Telemetry required — must be able to read and interpret EKG strips
- Ventilator management is required
- EMR: Cerner
- 12-hour day shifts with a 6:45 AM start time; bedside report
- Every other weekend required
- First to float, including potential mid-shift float to other Sacramento area facilities; float to MSNICU may occur (neuro experience preferred)
- Charge nurse available and generally does not carry a patient assignment but provides break relief
- Nurse aides available based on census and staffing
- Respiratory therapy and pharmacy support available 24/7
- Hospitalist or intensivist in-house at all times
- No IV team on-site
- Self-scheduling used, balanced by manager; schedules posted 4 weeks in advance with remote access available
- 13-week assignment
- Travelers will not be assigned LVAD patients; core staff will validate skills for CABG recovery, IABP, and CRRT
- IABP is not a 1:1 assignment
- Floor-specific orientation consists of 1–2 days with a preceptor
- Navy scrubs required; undershirts must be navy, white, or black; scrub jackets are optional but must be navy if worn
- Candidates must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia (DYS) exam prior to offer confirmation; the exam is pass/fail with two attempts allowed
- Previously completed Relias DYS exams taken within the last 12 months may be accepted
- A sterile technique competency test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates previously employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
- Coverage for 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's) is required; holiday scheduling is at the manager's discretion
- A unit manager interview is required as part of the selection process
Requirements
- Active CA RN license required (no pending licenses accepted)
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required (no pending certifications accepted)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Cardiovascular ICU or critical care experience required
- Ability to read and interpret EKG strips required
- Ventilator management experience required
- Cerner EMR experience preferred
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked (must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire)
- Valid driver's license required
