Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced NICU RN for a Level 3 NICU position requiring Cerner proficiency, NRP certification, and the ability to float to Peds and Postpartum.

Responsibilities

  • Level 3 NICU in an acute care hospital setting with 30 beds and an average census of 22
  • Patient population ranges from 22 weeks to term; high volume of sepsis, respiratory cases, preemies, drug withdrawal, and syphilis babies; no neonatal surgeries performed
  • Patient ratios: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 in the NICU; 1:4 in Peds
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a); every other weekend required with potential for additional weekend shifts
  • All NICU travelers are required to float to Peds and Postpartum, including taking couplet care assignments in Postpartum
  • No transport call required for travelers
  • Charge nurse present each shift; no nurse aides on unit
  • RT staffed 24/7 (1–2 in unit); pharmacy available 24/7
  • EMR: Cerner (required), HUGS for security, and Breast Milk Bridge (Cerner add-on for scanning breast milk)
  • Monitoring: Philips monitors; nurses interpret basic arrhythmias and consult NNP or MD for confirmation — no monitor techs in the NICU
  • Ventilators in use: High frequency vent, Draeger, Nitric Oxide, and Nava Ventilation
  • IV pumps: Medifusion (transitioning to Alaris syringe pumps); large volume of IVs and TPN
  • No ECMO; delivery nurse and RT attend high-risk deliveries
  • 2-shift floor-specific orientation provided
  • Provide care for critically ill neonates including preemies, high-volume sepsis and respiratory cases, drug withdrawal babies, and syphilis babies
  • A neonatal nurse practitioner is in-house 7p–7a; a neonatologist is in-house 7a–7p and available overnight for critical infant oversight
  • All MyJourney modules must be completed prior to arrival — travelers will be pushed back if modules are not completed, no exceptions
  • A pass/fail sterile technique test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation
  • Navy blue scrubs required
  • Coverage required for 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside firms will be considered

Requirements

  • Active CA RN license required (pending licenses not accepted)
  • Minimum 2 years of NICU nursing experience required
  • Current certifications required: BLS (AHA), NRP, and PALS (pending certifications not accepted)
  • Cerner EMR experience required
  • Strong IV skills required given high volume of IV and TPN management
  • Comfort working with surrogates required
  • Comfort floating to Peds and taking couplet care assignments in Postpartum required
  • Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) prior to offer confirmation
  • Driver's license required for consideration
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
