Job Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma facility in West Virginia, requiring ACLS certification and the ability to pass a cardiac rhythm exam.
Responsibilities
- Position is based in an acute care hospital Float Pool serving multiple Med/Surg Telemetry units, with the most frequent assignments to 6N (36 beds) and 7N (29 beds), with additional float potential to 4N, 5S, 6S, and Critical Care (20 beds)
- Patient population includes CHF, cardiac cath, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedic, and oncology cases (travelers will not administer chemotherapy)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are generally 1:5–6 on most units for both days and nights, with occasional ratios of 1:7 toward the end of a shift depending on acuity
- Telemetry monitoring uses Philips equipment; most units have monitor techs, but RNs must be able to independently read and interpret cardiac strips
- CPAP and BiPap are present on units; respiratory therapy manages all respiratory equipment
- CNAs are present on all units to provide support
- Charge nurses are available on every unit; day charge does not take a patient assignment, while night charge does
- Float Pool RNs report to the clinical coordinator's office prior to shift start for unit assignment and will typically be assigned to a parent unit with basic telemetry patients within scope of practice
- Drip titration is not required for this position
- EMR is Epic
- Schedule consists of 12-hour shifts (7a–7p or 7p–7a)
- Weekend requirement is every other weekend, covering both Saturday and Sunday for day and night shifts
- Holidays are worked in rotation with permanent staff
- Royal blue scrubs are required
- Travelers will be assigned basic telemetry patients within their scope of practice and are not expected to titrate drips
- Orientation consists of 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being eligible to apply
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required

Pros
Coworkers were great, very welcoming
Cons
Was told in phone interview that max ratio would be 1:9. Reality was 1:15. Unit was considered transitional, but patients were more like med/surg. Not willing to risk my license for such unsafe ratios.
