Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Post-Surgical Med/Surg night shift position requiring at least 1 year of experience and proficiency with blood transfusions, wound vacs, and PCA pumps.
Responsibilities
- Acute care Med/Surg unit (Level 7 - Post Surgical) in a hospital setting with 27 beds
- Patient population includes post-operative orthopedic (knee/hip/shoulder replacements, hip fractures), GU (TURBT, TURP, bladder biopsy), general surgery (hemicolectomy, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair), and cath lab patients (post peripheral interventions, dialysis cath insertions)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:5 (max 6) on days, 1:6 (max 7) on nights
- Heparin drips managed per protocol
- Charting via Cerner EMR
- Night shift: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch
- Every other weekend required
- May be included in a rotating holiday coverage schedule
- Low-census early dismissal (EA) may be assigned in 4-hour increments based on unit need
- Floating to other MS, MS-Tele, or IMC units for lower acuity patients on a rotating basis as needed
- No on-call requirement
- No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedules are set with staff input and adjusted for vacations and holidays
- Charge nurse present on each shift; night charge may take a small assignment of 2–3 patients
- Patient Care Technicians on unit (3 on days, 2 on nights) handling bathing, vitals, I&Os, EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, and more
- Telemetry strips are interpreted by monitor techs on a separate unit and faxed to Level 7 for RN review; RNs are not required to read their own strips
- Respiratory therapy on unit manages CPAP and BiPAP; RNs apply High Flow oxygen as patient condition warrants; no vents on this unit
- Orientation consists of 1 day with an educator followed by 1–2 days with a preceptor
- Navy blue or white scrubs required; scrubs are not provided
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without a 2-year break
- A copy of an unexpired driver's license is required
- Any licensing issues or hits must be disclosed upfront
Requirements
- Active WV or Compact RN license required
- BLS certification required
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- Proficiency with blood transfusions, wound vac changes, and PCA pumps required
- BSN not required
- Driver's license copy required for consideration

Traveler friendly, there are lots of travelers.
Cons
staff is not generally very friendly. Most staff are not helpful. The aides except for one or two are not helpful at all. They will argue with you when you ask for help.
