Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Oncology PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring high-acuity PCU experience and an active OH or compact RN license.
Responsibilities
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care within a hospital setting
- Patient population includes solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology diagnoses at a high acuity PCU level
- Small volume of med-surg patients also cared for on this unit
- Pediatric patients are occasionally present on the unit but are extremely rare and typically managed by permanent staff
- Patient ratios of 1:4-5 for med-surg telemetry and 1:3 for PCU
- Equipment includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanner, PCA pumps, and continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- 16-week contract with day/night rotating or night-only shift options (3x12-hour shifts, 7pm–7:30am)
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted by the traveler and balanced by the department on a 4-week scheduling cycle
- Floating required within units of equivalent or lower acuity
- First week of orientation is Monday–Friday on day shift; second week consists of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Candidates accepting a day/night rotating contract may be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination depending on departmental needs, reviewed each 4-week scheduling period
- All time-off and scheduling requests must be submitted at the time of initial application
- No break between assignments is required to change representation at this facility (except for Sterile Processing Techs, which still require a 30-day break)
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license currently in hand
- Current BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required
- Minimum of 2 years of high-acuity PCU experience required
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Pediatric experience is not required
- Required skills include: cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation, rapid response team utilization, feeding tube care, port access, blood product administration, central/PICC/peripheral line management, IV insertion, heparin protocols, non-titrating cardiac drips, PCA management, titration of cardiac drips, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, and tracheostomy management
- Preferred skills include: dysrhythmia management, IV insulin and insulin drip titration, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care/wound vac, arterial line management, surgical drains, and non-invasive airway management
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
- 2 professional supervisory references from within the past 2 years required for consideration
- Full 7-year work history with all gaps explained required for consideration
