Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring a minimum of 2 years of PCU experience, Epic proficiency, and flexibility to float across a multi-facility regional health system on night shifts.

Details

  • New 12-bed PCU within a 33-bed, non-trauma, non-teaching community hospital setting
  • Adult medical PCU patient population with diagnoses including CHF, COPD, established vents and trachs, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, CIWA, dialysis, and insulin drip management
  • Patient ratio of 1:4 (1:4 if floating to Med/Surg)
  • No telemetry technician on staff — nurses are responsible for independently monitoring their own patients via in-room monitors
  • Drip management includes Cardizem, amiodarone, nitro, heparin, and insulin (with Endotool)
  • Vented patients may be encountered; willingness to be trained on vented patient care and Precedex drips is required
  • EMR: Epic (experience required); IV pump: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell
  • 12-hour night shifts, 1900–0700, 36 hours per week
  • 6-week self-scheduling cycle with manager approval
  • Weekend rotation: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule, with potential for additional weekend shifts based on departmental need
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Travelers are first to float and may float within scope of practice to facilities across Region 1, including Cabarrus, University City, Stanly, Lake Norman, any Freestanding ED within the region, and Central Division (CMC Main, Mercy, and LCH); floating is mandatory and candidates unwilling to float to all listed facilities should not apply
  • Travel time between facilities during a mid-shift float is compensated

Requirements

  • Active RN license — NC or compact license required
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of PCU experience required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Proficiency in general nursing skills including IV starts, wound care, dressing changes, wound vacs, drain management, central line care (dressing changes and blood draws), NG tube insertion, tube feeding, PCA pumps, kangaroo pumps, and cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Must be comfortable performing lab draws (no phlebotomy staff on unit)
  • Must be comfortable titrating vasoactive and cardiac drips (Cardizem, amiodarone, nitro, heparin, insulin with Endotool)
  • Willingness to care for vented patients and receive on-unit training if not already experienced
  • Permanent address must be located at least 50 miles from the home unit
  • Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers with more than 5 years of PCU experience will be considered; those with less than 5 years of PCU experience must have prior travel experience
  • Candidates who have previously worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
  • Unit support includes 3 CNAs (one performing HUC duties), a free-floating charge nurse, RT available 24/7, and a hospitalist available 24/7 (on-call at night); no phlebotomy, IV/VAT, or dedicated wound care RN on staff
  • Intensivist is not available at night; anesthesia is available 24/7 and can assist with intubations
  • Orientation includes facility new employee orientation (NEO) plus 1–2 unit shifts depending on comfort level
  • Holiday coverage expected for 75% of holidays during the contract
  • RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; additional time off or RTO surrounding holidays requires manager approval
  • Scrubs: navy blue required
  • Parking is free
