Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a Level III Trauma Teaching Hospital, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Tele RN experience and the ability to float across multiple regional facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Night shift position, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week
  • 28-bed Med/Surg Tele unit within a 457-bed Level III Trauma Teaching Hospital designated as a Chest Pain Center, Stroke Center of Excellence, and Bariatric Center of Excellence
  • Patient population includes orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, trauma, vascular surgery, and medical overflow cases
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4–6, which may increase to 1:7–8 during surge
  • Remote telemetry monitoring is in place
  • EMR is Epic; experience is expected
  • IV pumps: BD Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Philips and Masimo
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Floating is required across all facilities within Region 1 (Cabarrus, University City, Stanly, Lake Norman, and Central Division including CMC Main, Mercy, and LCH – pediatrics only) within scope of practice — candidates who are not agreeable to this floating requirement should not apply
  • 6-week scheduling cycle
  • Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
  • Up to 6 days of RTO may be approved, excluding holidays; any missed contracted hours must be made up at the end of the contract
  • Department support includes CNAs (phlebotomy, ADLs, Foley insertion/removal, peripheral IV removal), IV/VAT team, charge nurse, RT 24/7, hospitalist 24/7, house supervisor, patient safety attendants, a Behavioral Response Team (BERT) for de-escalation, and a rapid response/code team
  • A unit mentor is available to provide additional support and assist with policy guidance
  • Orientation includes a new employee orientation (NEO) plus 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Required scrub color is navy
  • Free parking is available in designated areas
  • Unit culture is described as positive and supportive
  • First-time travelers are not preferred but will be considered
  • Candidates who have previously worked a permanent position at any AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible

Requirements

  • Active NC RN license or compact RN license currently in hand
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg Tele RN experience, with most recent experience within the last year
  • General post-surgical skills required, including incision care, patient assessment, drain management, chest tube care, wound care and wound vacs, mobility assistance, patient education, trach care, NG tube insertion, and use of braces/traction
  • Must have a permanent address at least 50 miles from the home unit — local candidates are not accepted
  • At least one professional reference from within the past year required, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
