Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Emergency Department travel assignment at a Level IV Trauma Center, requiring active MI licensure and a minimum of 2 years of ED experience.

Responsibilities

  • Level IV Trauma Center Emergency Department with 14 beds and 2 trauma bays
  • Fast Track area with 3 designated rooms and a separate triage area with 2 rooms
  • Patient volume averages 40–60 patients per day
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3–4 during the day, with higher ratios at night; after 3am, staffing reduces to 2 RNs until 7am
  • Common cases include traumas, STEMIs, strokes, MVAs, and agricultural-related injuries
  • ER holds are managed within the department, with overflow into an adjacent ACU
  • 12-hour evening and night shifts with variable start times of 3pm or 7pm
  • Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) required
  • Rotating variable start times required; scheduling is manager-directed
  • Charting system is currently Cerner, transitioning to Epic
  • Floating to inpatient areas may be required to assist as needed
  • ED physicians are available 24/7 in-house, with mid-level providers also on staff
  • Support staff includes 24/7 phlebotomy, respiratory therapy (ABGs, breathing treatments, EKGs), CNA/PFE, medics, and LPNs who float to assist with tasks
  • No dedicated monitor technician — RNs are responsible for reading their own cardiac strips via a central monitoring station
  • Travelers may perform triage after reviewing and demonstrating understanding of facility policies and procedures
  • Dedicated psych/seclusion rooms are available and any room can be converted as needed; security relies on local PD and internal code backup
  • Orientation consists of computer-based training, 1 day of policy review, and 1 day of department-specific floor orientation (8 hours total)
  • Holiday coverage required, with at least 2 out of 3 winter holidays and typically every other holiday during the contract
  • Any solid color scrubs are acceptable; attire must be clean and professional
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Candidates who previously worked at this facility as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
  • Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local and may be subject to a reduced travel pay rate

Requirements

  • Active Michigan (MI) RN license required by start date
  • Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), PALS (AHA), and TNCC — all must be active
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department experience required
  • 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference within the last 3 years of relevant experience
