Description

Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position in a corrections-based oncology unit, requiring Epic proficiency and at least 2 years of recent MS/Tele experience.

Responsibilities

  • Hospital-based corrections unit serving Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) inmates — a locked, access-controlled environment managed by Corrections Officers (COs)
  • Unit covers both Medical-Surgical Telemetry and Progressive Care (PCU/DOU/IMC) patient populations
  • Patient population includes active oncology diagnoses and treatments (solid tumors, hematology), oncology workup admissions, and non-oncology diagnoses such as COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, and surgical cases
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 on PCU and 1:4–5 on MS; CO-to-inmate ratio is 1:2
  • Floating required across various Oncology MS units as needed; some shifts will be assigned to MS, others to PCU
  • Procedures include cardiac telemetry monitoring and dysrhythmia management, IV insulin protocols, blood product administration, central/peripheral/PICC line management, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (no titration), PCA management, feeding tube care, pre/post hemodialysis management, external CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, tracheostomy management, and phlebotomy
  • EMR: Epic (required); Medication system: Pyxis
  • Shift: Nights, 3x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:30)
  • Weekend shift requirements vary based on unit needs
  • Candidates will provide telemetry-monitored care to an incarcerated oncology and general medical-surgical patient population in a secure, locked unit
  • Robust on-site support available including interpretation services, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, rapid response teams, respiratory services, social services, and transportation
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates are accepted
  • Former employees of the facility are eligible after a 6-month separation period; current Ohio State University hospital employees are not eligible
  • All time-off requests must be submitted at the time of application and built into the contract
  • Fingerprinting is required for Ohio credentialing and must be initiated promptly after signing — candidates outside of Ohio may need to travel to an Ohio fingerprinting location or complete a mailed packet urgently upon receipt

Requirements

  • Valid OH RN license or compact RN license currently in hand
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of MS/Tele experience, with at least 1 year of current specialty experience within the past 3 years
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Oncology experience preferred but not required
  • PCU/stepdown experience preferred
  • Nursing degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program
  • 2 professional references required: at least 1 from a manager, director, or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as 2nd reference); coworker references are not accepted

  • 401(k) Plan
  • Weekly Payroll Deposit
  • Free Online CEUs
