  • Nurse-to-patient ratio goal is 1:4, though 1:5 is common and 1:6 is possible
  • Unit is supported by 2–3 CNAs with ratios of approximately 1:10–12
  • Telemetry monitoring via Nihon Kohden system; RNs must independently read and interpret their own telemetry strips despite Tele Tech support
  • RNs must be able to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • All respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed by Respiratory Therapy

  • Pharmacy (Pyxis), RT, and hospitalist/intensivist coverage are all available in-house 24/7
  • Charting is performed in Allscripts/Sunrise EMR
  • 12-hour night shifts; staff must be on the unit ready by 6:45 PM with shifts running 7 PM–7 AM
  • Nights shift requires 4 weekend shifts (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday) per 4-week schedule
  • Self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met, with up to 4 requested days off per month
  • Floating is required into Telemetry or Med-Surg units with ratios up to 1:6 (occasionally 1:7 in Med-Surg), and to the Pandemic Unit as needed
  • Navy blue scrub top and bottom with navy scrub jacket required; hoodies are not permitted
  • Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining hours and day two on the unit with a preceptor; independent practice begins on day three
  • Charge nurses carry a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
  • Travelers are expected to maintain flexibility for holiday coverage, though holidays are typically covered by permanent staff
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this travel position
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before being eligible to reapply
  • Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
  • Attendance is strictly enforced; two occurrences of tardiness or call-offs, including emergencies not reported more than 2 hours in advance, may result in termination

Requirements

  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
