Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

  • 492-bed Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center hospital setting
  • Float pool position with home unit assigned on the first day of orientation; floating to like units (MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task, ICU-ER holds)
  • Possible unit assignments include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (23 beds), 5 South Neuroscience (33 beds), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (39 beds), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (18 beds), 3 South Orthopedics (20 beds), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (23 beds)
  • 6 North Trauma Surgical: General surgery and vascular surgery patients
  • 5 South Neuroscience: CVA, TBI, seizure, AMS, spinal fusion, craniotomy, degenerative diseases, post-trauma, and angiogram patients
  • 5 North Med/Surg Oncology: All patient types except stroke and MI, including palliative care, ETOH withdrawal, and MS/Oncology patients; telemetry monitored via hallway monitors and tele techs
  • 4 South Clinical Decision Unit: General Med/Surg patients including COPD, CHF, diabetes, MRSA, VRE, C-Diff, COVID, pneumonia, renal failure, sepsis, UTI, and end-of-life comfort care
  • 3 South Orthopedics: Orthopedic and spine patients including joint replacements, fractures, fusions, and laminectomies
  • 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology: Urology, ENT, orthopedic, and general Med/Surg patients
  • Patient ratios typically 1:4; 5 North Oncology runs 1:6 for RNs and LPNs
  • At lower ratios, RNs are expected to assist with patient turns, baths, and ADLs
  • Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • 12-hour day and night shifts available (7a–7p, 7p–7a), 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend required, or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • 4-week schedule cycle; no self-scheduling — scheduling managed through Smart Square
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Spacelabs
  • Interviews conducted via SimpliFi video platform
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:10–12 ratio for VS, ADLs, glucose checks), HUC/receptionist, charge nurse (rarely takes assignment), phlebotomy team, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
  • Orientation for new or returning travelers (absent 1+ year) includes 24 hours of classroom training and 24 hours of on-unit orientation
  • Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Candidates requesting time off should be aware of blackout/high-demand dates; approval for blackout dates requires manager approval
  • Scrubs: any color accepted
  • Parking available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
  • First-time travelers will be considered with a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and Epic or Cerner EMR experience
  • Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before being considered for a travel position
  • Reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
  • DOB (day and month) and SSN required for consideration

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can be pending at time of consideration, with ETA provided)
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is strictly ICU-based
  • 6 North Trauma Surgical: At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience; skills include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, and medication administration
  • 5 South Neuroscience: Skills include IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG, NGT, colostomy/ostomy, wound care, chest tubes, surgical site care, C-collar, abdominal binders, and restraints
  • 5 North Med/Surg Oncology: Skills include trach care, chest tubes, PEG tubes, wound care, drains, foleys, and IV starts; chemo administration if certified (chemo experience highly preferred but not required)
  • 4 South Clinical Decision Unit: Skills include tracheotomy care, suctioning, O2 therapy, ostomy care, foley care, PEG/NGT care, wound care, chest tube, central line care, pressure ulcer management, falls prevention, and restraints
  • 3 South Orthopedics: Skills include PCA pump management, negative pressure wound dressings, dressing changes, foley, and drain management (Hemovac/JP)
  • 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology: Skills include trach care, wound care, wound vacs, IV starts, CVL dressing changes, and nurse-driven foley protocol
  • Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Must have previously worked at this facility for at least 6 months before returning as a traveler (measured from last shift worked to new start date)
