Job Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Tele unit at a Level 4 Trauma, Critical Access hospital in Michigan, requiring at least 1 year of Med/Surg or Med/Surg Telemetry experience and comfort with limited onsite resources.

Responsibilities

• Acute care setting on a Med/Tele unit with 24 inpatient beds and up to 10 observation/day surgery patients
• Common diagnoses include NHP, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU conditions, pacemaker, sepsis, nursing home placements, and day surgical cases including orthopedic (hips and knees), cholecystectomies, appendectomies, and TURPS-CBI
• Small pediatric population exists on the unit but travelers are generally not assigned pediatric patients unless they have prior pediatric experience
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are 5:1 on day shift and 6:1 at 11 PM; team nursing with LPNs follows a 2:7 ratio
• Telemetry monitoring is reviewed in the ICU daily; basic arrhythmia knowledge required with a physical monitor at the nurses' station
• RNs are not required to titrate drips
• RT is available 24/7 and oversees the entire hospital; CPAP equipment is used
• Hospitalist is in-house until 6 PM daily, with telehealth coverage overnight
• Charge nurse carries a patient assignment; travelers may be placed as relief charge nurse
• Nurse aides are present on the unit
• 12-hour shifts with day/night rotation (0700–1900 and 1900–0700)
• Weekend rotation required every other weekend, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
• Floating to like units and patients is required
• EMR is currently Cerner, transitioning to Epic
• Orientation consists of an 8-hour computer education day followed by a 4-hour shadow shift, then a full 12-hour orientation shift, with independent practice beginning on day 3
• Travelers may be placed on call or standby as needed
• Holiday coverage required for 2 out of 3 assigned holidays
• Professional scrubs required; no specific color mandated
• Candidates who previously worked at this facility as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
• Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which may affect pay package structure
• Self-scheduling is accommodated when possible, though shift blocking cannot be guaranteed

Requirements

• Active MI RN license required by start date
• BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
• Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg or Med/Surg Telemetry experience in an acute care setting
• Must be proficient with IV starts, as there is no IV team onsite
• Experience with TURPS-CBI preferred
• Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 experience preferred
• Basic telemetry arrhythmia interpretation knowledge required
• 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years of relevant specialty experience
