Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, active NE or compact RN license, and the ability to titrate drips in an acute care setting.

Details

  • Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting with 33 beds
  • Patient population ranges from young adults to geriatrics with diagnoses including sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem conditions
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5; CNAs available at approximately 1:10, though availability fluctuates with census
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, Insulin, and IV antibiotics, as well as administer maintenance IV medications
  • RT equipment on unit includes BiPAP and Airvo
  • Telemetry monitor techs are present, but RNs are required to independently read and interpret their own telemetry strips
  • Charting is done via Epic
  • 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); schedule is set by unit schedulers
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday coverage required as needed to meet unit needs
  • Floating may be required to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care

Requirements

  • Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses are not accepted
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications are not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • PCU/Stepdown or comparable acute care experience required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Driver's license required for consideration and will be used to verify permanent address
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility, as confirmed by driver's license
  • Candidates may not be currently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include managing high-acuity stepdown patients, titrating drips, reading telemetry strips, completing bedside shift report, and performing hourly rounding
  • Unit has a fast-paced patient flow with frequent admissions and discharges within the same shift — a strong sense of teamwork, a positive attitude, and commitment to patient experience are key to success on this unit
  • A charge nurse is present on each shift and carries an assignment
  • Orientation consists of one week of classroom instruction followed by two 12-hour shifts of on-the-floor orientation
  • An open-book, pass/fail skills exam is administered on the Friday of orientation week — a score of 90% or higher is required to pass; failure to pass may result to contract termination
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them may result in contract termination
  • Navy blue scrubs are required for RNs
  • RTO requests must be submitted upfront; 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract will be considered — additional RTO will not be approved after the start of the contract
  • Candidates who were previously employed PRN through outside staffing firms at CommonSpirit facilities may still be considered
