Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown/IMU position requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications with the ability to rotate between day and night shifts.

Details

  • 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) in an acute care hospital setting
  • Patient population includes chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cardiac cath (radial band management and removal, groin checks), and patients on Tikosyn therapy
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:4 to 1:5, occasionally 1:6
  • Charting is done in Allscripts/Sunrise EMR
  • Telemetry monitoring uses Nihon Kohden equipment; RNs must be able to independently read and interpret rhythm strips despite the presence of Tele Techs
  • RNs must be able to titrate the following drips: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • Respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed by RT, who is in-house 24/7
  • IV team is in-house 24/7 and performs all IV starts; a PICC/Midline team is also available
  • Hospitalist and intensivist are both in-house 24/7, with residents also available around the clock
  • Pharmacy is in-house 24/7 with Pyxis medication dispensing
  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; shifts run 7a–7p/7p–7a with staff expected on the unit by 6:45 AM/PM
  • Weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; day shift requires 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule with a minimum of 3 night shifts; night shift requires 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Self-scheduling is available as long as unit needs are met; staff may request up to 4 days off per month
  • Floating is required into Telemetry or Med/Surg units with ratios up to 1:6, occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg; floating to a Pandemic Unit is also expected
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Stepdown or IMU-level experience required
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips independently
  • Experience titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips required
  • Allscripts/Sunrise EMR experience preferred
  • Valid, unexpired driver's license required for consideration
  • Any licensing disciplinary history must be disclosed upfront

Additional Information

  • Navy blue scrub top and bottom required; navy scrub jackets permitted, no hoodies
  • Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining hours and a second full day on the unit with a preceptor, after which nurses work independently
  • Travelers are expected to be flexible for holiday coverage, though permanent staff typically cover most holidays
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this travel position
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being eligible to return; cumulative time worked within WVU Medicine counts toward a maximum of one year, after which a 2-year break is required
  • Two supervisor and peer references are required, including one supervisor reference from any permanent facility worked within the last 12 months
  • A skills checklist completed within the past year is required for consideration
  • Copies of all certifications and a valid driver's license must be submitted for consideration
