Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neurosurgical/Neuroscience Med/Surg position requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and IN or Compact RN licensure.
Details
- Night shift schedule: 3x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:30)
- Neurosurgical/Neuroscience Med/Surg/step-down unit within a hospital setting
- Patient population includes neuro trauma, MVA, stroke, seizure, brain and spinal cord injuries, craniotomies for tumors, laminectomies, shunts for hydrocephalus, and post-Neuro Critical Care patients; approximately 40% of patients are admitted from the Neuro Critical Care unit and 30% discharge to rehab facilities
- Patient age range: 15 to 100+
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5–6
- Procedures include in/out caths, line management, G-tube care, occasional lumbar punctures, occasional trach care, PCA pumps, and wound vacs
- EMR: Cerner (experience required)
- Every other weekend required; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs
- Floating may be required to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) within the same hospital or an affiliate hospital nearby
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be assigned based on operational needs, with training and resources provided
Requirements
- Active IN or Compact RN license currently in hand
- Current certifications required: BLS (AHA or RQI accepted) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Med/Surg, Med/Surg Telemetry, or PCU-level experience accepted
- IV start proficiency required
- Cerner EMR experience required
- Graduation from a nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE required
- Local candidates are not accepted for this position
Additional Information
- Nurses provide primary care with strong team support; Charge Nurse typically carries a reduced patient assignment to better support staff
- Early mobility and rehabilitation are a significant focus, with daily collaboration with therapy teams
- Unit sees approximately 2–3 surgeries per day
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Former permanent or PRN employees of IU Health must have been separated for at least 12 months before being considered as a traveler
- RTO of 5 days or fewer may be auto-approved
- Coverage is required for 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Indiana-licensed RNs are not permitted to work at IU Health facilities in Med/Surg roles (exemptions apply only to Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers)
