Details
- Acute care hospital stepdown unit with 20 beds (8 private, remainder semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 3:1
- Diverse patient population including COPD, CHF, DM, sepsis, renal failure, DKA, alcohol withdrawal, overdoses, pneumonia, and neuro/surgical/cardiac cases
- Patients frequently require BiPAP, CPAP, face mask ventilation, trachs, vented trach patients, chest tubes, G-tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, and central lines
- RNs are required to titrate drips including Cardene, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Heparin, and low-dose or infrequent Vasopressors
- All patients on bedside Philips monitors; telemetry techs interpret strips and RNs confirm
- 12-hour shifts, 7am–7pm or 7pm–7am; nights position
- Every other weekend required (nights: Friday/Saturday; days: Saturday/Sunday)
- Holiday coverage on every other holiday rotation, including working the companion day of major holidays
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Travelers are first to float; float destinations include ICU (with extensive ICU experience), other Stepdown units, or General Med — patient ratios adjust by level of care
- EMR: Epic
- 2 PCTs per shift, each covering up to 10 patients when the unit is at full capacity
Requirements
- Active Illinois (IL) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration (pending licenses not accepted)
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS recommended
- ICU or Intermediate/Stepdown experience with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 3:1 or 2:1 required — progressive care or telemetry experience alone is not sufficient
- Trach and ventilator experience required
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Negative drug screen required; facility is a drug-free campus
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include titrating vasoactive and cardiac drips, managing complex stepdown patients, and confirming telemetry strip interpretations
- Charge nurse is present on each shift (free charge unless staffing is not ideal); house supervisor available 24/7
- Orientation consists of approximately 3 days: 1 day Epic training, 1 day with unit educator, and 1 day on the floor with an RN
- Block scheduling is available and the unit works with travel RNs on scheduling preferences
- No scrub color restriction — any color is acceptable
- Local candidates are accepted; clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility are subject to a local pay rate
- Licenses and certifications must be active at time of consideration — pending credentials are not accepted
- COVID vaccination is not required for this position
