Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring unit position requiring at least 2 years of experience, Level 1 trauma background, and night shift availability.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting, Level 1 Trauma Center
- Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring unit (6N) with 48 total beds, including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms
- Patient population includes epilepsy (24–48 hour trend EEGs), brain tumors, subdural hematomas, scoliosis surgeries, TBI, and other neurological diagnoses
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 on both days and nights
- Charge nurse present with no patient assignment; one resource RN available on day and night shifts
- PCTs available: 1–2 on days, 1 at night
- Primarily Med/Surg with some telemetry monitoring required
- BiPAP ventilators used; Respiratory Therapy manages vents 24/7
- IV SWAT RN available for difficult IV access
- Hospitalist or intensivist present in-house during day shift
- Pharmacy available 24/7
- Charting performed in Cerner EMR
- 12-hour night shifts, 7pm–7am
- 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week period
- Holiday shifts assigned based on unit rotation
- Floating possible to Med/Surg and Telemetry floors
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active AZ or Compact (NLC) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Telemetry experience required
- Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam prior to offer confirmation; candidates have 2 attempts
- Strong critical thinking and patient assessment skills required, including the ability to detect subtle neurological changes
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Driver's license required for consideration
- Candidates must permanently reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible; driver's license is used to verify permanent address
- BSN preferred but not required
- Med/Surg or Telemetry certification preferred
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include neurological assessments, cranial nerve assessment (training provided for qualified Med/Surg-Tele RNs), telemetry monitoring, and care for epilepsy and complex neuro patients
- On Day 1 of orientation, nurses must pass a pass/fail SIMs Lab assessment covering sterile technique for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes — nurses have been dismissed during SIMs Lab for breaking sterile field
- Orientation also includes educational modules on lifts, restraints, and wound care
- Floor-specific orientation consists of 2 shifts on the unit
- Self-scheduling model used for the unit
- Scrub color required: Grey's Anatomy steel
- Natural hair color required and facial piercings are not permitted
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates placed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
