Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/IMC/Med-Surg travel assignment requiring at least 1 year of PCU or ICU experience and Cerner proficiency.
Details
- Work in a combined PCU/IMC/Med-Surg unit within an acute care hospital setting (Trauma Level IV)
- Unit has 12 beds plus 4 ICU-overflow rooms with an average census of 8 patients
- Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, COVID, and post-op orthopedic cases (knees, hips, falls)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: MS 1:5, IMC/PCU 1:3–4, ICU 1:3; team nursing model pairs RNs with LPNs for up to 7 patients total, with a minimum of 2 RNs in the department at all times
- CNAs available when census exceeds 6 patients
- RNs are required to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Heparin (IMCU), and pressors such as Levo, Cardizem, and Dobutamine (ICU)
- RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting their own telemetry strips; remote tele monitoring is conducted externally
- Charting system is Cerner (transitioning to Epic)
- 12-hour night shifts
- Every 3rd weekend required (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
- Holiday coverage required for 2 out of every 3 assigned holidays
- On-call/standby required on a rotating basis with a 45-minute response time; candidates willing to float to the ED are less likely to be placed on standby
- Floating to the ED for tasking or holding patients is available as an alternative to low-census call-off
- Self-scheduling with staff scheduler assistance; travelers are expected to be flexible in filling gaps in permanent staffing
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WI or compact RN license required by start date
- Current AHA certifications: BLS and ACLS
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or ICU RN experience required (MS-Tele experience alone is not sufficient)
- Cerner EMR experience required
- Ability to titrate vasoactive and cardiac drips
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac monitoring strips independently
- 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years
Additional Information
- Travelers may be asked to step into a charge nurse role; the charge nurse typically carries a small patient assignment
- Nurse supervisor covers both the ED and the floor and serves as a resource for staff
- Orientation consists of 4 hours of computer-based training (CBT) and 8 hours of floor training
- Any solid scrub color is acceptable
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Travel duos are accepted
- Candidates who previously worked for this health system as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their application date
- Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which affects the travel pay rate
