Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Float Pool position covering ICU, Med/Surg Tele, and PCU units across two campuses, requiring at least 2 years of experience and the ability to titrate vasoactive drips on night shift.
Details
- Float pool covers ICU, Med/Surg Tele, and PCU units across two campuses, including inpatients holding in the ED
- Patient population includes geriatric, orthopedic, post-procedural, post-MI, post-cardiac cath, and CABG (post-op day 3–4) patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: PCU 1:4, Med/Surg Tele 1:5–6
- RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Insulin
- Respiratory equipment in use includes CPAP and BiPAP on Med/Surg at night; BiPAP, CPAP, and heated high-flow oxygen in PCU
- Monitor techs oversee PCU and Med/Surg Tele; RNs must be able to independently interpret cardiac strips
- Charting is done in Cerner
- 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a), every other weekend required
- Travelers are first to float and must remain flexible with unit assignments
- Unit assignment notifications are sent via text message approximately 2 hours prior to shift start
- Standby/on-call requirement exists — travelers may be placed on standby for a full 12-hour shift and called in as needed
- Travelers are included in the permanent staff holiday rotation
- Schedule is published 6 weeks out covering 4 weeks at a time; block scheduling may be accommodated on nights
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) license required — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required, with at least 1 year in an ICU setting
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
- Ability to titrate vasoactive and cardiac drips independently
- Competency interpreting cardiac monitor strips
- Driver's license required for consideration
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (permanent address as shown on driver's license is used to determine eligibility)
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year (candidates employed PRN through outside firms will be considered)
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include caring for groin sites in the stepdown unit, managing post-procedural cardiac patients, and supporting CABG recovery (post-op days 3–4)
- Nurse aides are available across all settings
- Each unit has a dedicated charge nurse who does not take a patient assignment
- Candidates must take and pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) prior to an offer being confirmed — a passing score of 80% is required within two attempts
- A sterile technique assessment for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes is administered on the first day of orientation
- Orientation includes an 8-hour general hospital orientation day, a 12-hour shift on West Med/Tele, and a 12-hour shift on West PCU
- Current dress code is solid-color professional scrubs; Navy scrubs per Dignity guidelines will be required starting in October
- The two campuses are approximately 20–25 minutes apart; travelers must secure housing that allows them to meet float zone requirements
- First-time travelers are not mentioned as accepted — prior hospital experience is required

Cons
Cost of living is High, roughly $2000-2500 for your own private space. Float between East and West Campus, 25 minutes apart, west will likely be where you spend 75% of your shifts so pick your housing accordingly.
