Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro Med/Surg position requiring strong neuro experience, Epic proficiency, and NIHSS certification for a weekend day shift schedule.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting on a 20-bed Neuro Med/Surg unit (6 West)
- Patient population includes neurosciences, stroke, seizures, deep brain stimulators (DBS), surgical/post-op spines, and neurological disorders
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6 for floor patients; nurse aides are present on the unit with a ratio of 1:7-10
- Telemetry is present on the unit; RNs verify and document monitor tech strip readings in Epic rather than reading strips independently
- RT is available 24/7 and manages floor vents; RNs are not required to have vent experience
- Charge nurse support is available 24/7
- Titration of drips is performed per physician orders; common drips include Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, and Insulin
- 12-hour day shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Weekend day schedule: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday or Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
- Floating may be required to units 7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10E as first priority, then to other hospital units as needed
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS (AHA) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) — NIHSS must be in hand at time of consideration; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Strong neuro nursing experience required
- Recent Epic experience required
- Proficiency and frequent experience with G-tubes required
- Driver's license copy required for consideration
- Copies of all certifications required for consideration
- 2 references required: 1 supervisor reference (from a permanent facility if applicable within the last 12 months) and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
- Skills checklist completed within the past year required
- Any background hits must be disclosed at the time of consideration
Additional Information
- Scrub dress code: any combination of white and royal blue
- Orientation consists of 1 shift on the unit
- Travelers are expected to participate in the holiday rotation
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before being considered
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year without a 2-year break
- Candidates may only be submitted to one WVU facility at a time

Units are traveler friendly, ratios 1:2 ICU, 1:3 SD, 1:5-6 Floor. Epic charting system, lots of resources and ancillary services available at most times. Easy to reach out to docs, docs are hit and miss on good communication like most places. Usually have float nurses in the ICU units to help out.
Cons
Common to get pulled as a traveler but wont pull ICU to anywhere but other ICU and SD.
