Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and BLS and NIHSS certifications.
Details
- Float Pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation — potential units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
- Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
- Patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
- Patient populations vary by unit and include trauma/surgical, neurological (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, general med/surg, orthopedic/spine, and urology/ENT cases
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Float assignments are to like units or patient types (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
- EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
- Equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available
Requirements
- Active RN license in Alabama or a Compact RN license required (may submit pending licensure with ETA)
- Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
- Cerner experience required for candidates with ICU-only background; Cerner or Epic experience required for all candidates
- Core clinical skills required vary by unit and may include wound care, chest tube management, trach care, NGT/PEG, IV starts, central line care, ostomy care, Foley care, and telemetry strip interpretation
- Chemo administration certification highly preferred for oncology unit assignments
- Trauma or surgical nursing experience (at least 1 year) required for Trauma Surgical unit consideration
- DOB (day and month) and SSN required for consideration
- One professional reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required
- Copies of current certifications required
- Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided minimum experience requirements are met
- New travelers and those returning after 1+ year away from the facility will receive 24 hours of classroom orientation plus 24 hours of on-unit orientation
- Former permanent staff must have a gap of at least 6 months from their last shift before being eligible to return as a traveler
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks), charge nurses, HUC/receptionists, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
- Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
- Time off requests are subject to facility blackout dates throughout the year
- Scrubs of any color are acceptable
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
- An interview with the facility is required prior to placement
