Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and BLS and NIHSS certifications.
Details
- Float Pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation — potential units include: 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North Med/Surg Oncology, 4 South Clinical Decision Unit, 3 South Orthopedics, and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
- 492-bed Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, orthopedics, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg
- Patient ratios range from 1:5–6 depending on unit and patient type
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
- Shift start time: 7:00 AM
- Floating required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER/MS holds)
- Every other weekend rotation, or approximately 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- EMR: Cerner (preferred); IV pumps: Plum 360; Medication dispensing: Omnicell; Monitors: Spacelabs
- Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can submit pending with ETA)
- Current certifications: BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
- Experience with Epic or Cerner required
- Skills vary by unit but generally include: IV starts, wound care, chest tubes, NGT/PEG tubes, trach care, foley care, central line care, medication administration, and documentation
- Chemo administration certification preferred for oncology unit assignment
- Cerner EMR experience preferred
- Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience
- Staff who have previously worked at this facility must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked to start date) before returning as a traveler
- Orientation for new and returning travelers (absent 1+ years) consists of 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours on the unit
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks), a receptionist/HUC, a charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and telemetry techs
- Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not contractually guaranteed prior to arrival
- Extensive RTO blackout dates are in effect throughout the year — candidates should confirm availability before applying
- Scrubs: any color permitted
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
- A copy of certifications, one reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months, and date of birth (day and month) are required for consideration
