Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level 1 Trauma, academic medical center in Winston-Salem, NC, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Surg Tele experience.
Details
- 29-bed Med/Surg Telemetry unit within a 885-bed Level 1 Trauma academic medical center
- General medicine patient population including diabetes, GI, respiratory, renal, and wound care cases
- Common procedures include chest tube and trach management, PIV starts, drain and tube care, PCA pumps, and lab draws
- Drip management includes Amiodarone, Fentanyl PCA, Ketamine PCA, Dilaudid PCA, and Heparin
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; CNA-to-patient ratio of 1:9-10
- Telemetry monitoring via centralized telemetry
- EMR: Epic; IV pump: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell
- 12-hour day shifts (0630–1900) or night shifts (1830–0630), 3 days per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call responsibilities
- Floating required to other Med/Surg units
- 6-week scheduling cycle with manager approval required for RTO
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license currently in hand
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry (MST) experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Experience reading and interpreting telemetry strips required
- Proficiency with chest tubes, trachs, PIV starts, drains and tubes, and PCA pumps required
- Experience with Epic EMR
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to tolerate moderate to high stress levels
- Minimum 1 professional reference from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN dated within the past year required for consideration
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
Additional Information
- Provide direct and indirect patient care to general medicine patients, including telemetry monitoring, drip management, and procedures such as chest tube and trach care
- Phlebotomy is a shared responsibility between RN and phlebotomy team
- Department support includes CNAs, a receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, rapid response team, RT 24/7, hospitalist 24/7, and intensivist 24/7
- Orientation includes NEO plus 2 days of departmental orientation
- A clinical interview is required
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
- Royal blue scrubs required

- Unit culture is described as patient-centered, highly reliable, and team-oriented
- First-time travelers may be considered with a strong Med/Surg Telemetry background
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible; local candidates are not accepted
- Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an Advocate Health Southeast (AHSE) facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being considered
