Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele RN experience and a GA or compact RN license.

Details

  • Work in a 35-bed Med/Surg Tele unit within a 637-licensed-bed Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital
  • Patient population includes those with acute or chronic disease, post-op surgeries, and common med-surg comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances
  • RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6, supported by LPNs and CNAs (2–3 per shift)
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a
  • Weekend rotation of 6 shifts per 6-week schedule
  • No on-call or call-back responsibilities
  • Floating required to all adult med-surg and telemetry units in the facility
  • EMR: Epic (experience noted)
  • Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, Philips monitors, Glucommander, PCA pain management, bladder scanners, chest tubes, JP and Hemovac drains, and portable vital sign monitors

Requirements

  • Active RN license — GA or compact license required
  • Current BLS required
  • Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) interpretation competency required; candidates must pass an EKG competency exam
  • ACLS preferred but not required
  • Medical-Surgical national certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Tele RN experience required
  • Level 1 Trauma hospital experience preferred given the acuity of the setting
  • Proficiency in trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, Glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips, and cardiac drip titration (heart rate)
  • Skills in IV insertion and care, central line management, wound care, post-op monitoring, and telemetry interpretation
  • At least 1 professional reference from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN dated within the past year required for consideration
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of 1 day of general facility orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
  • CNAs assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulation, turning, hourly rounding, and patient transport
  • Unit secretary is available on-unit from 7a–11p; house-wide call secretary covers 11p–7a
  • Charge nurse may carry a patient assignment
  • PICC team available; nurses draw from CVLs as needed; most units use lab-collected phlebotomy
  • Respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage available 24/7
  • Central Telemetry Unit provides remote monitoring support
  • Resource and discharge nurses float to all units
  • Holiday coverage required — travelers are expected to work 75% of major holidays (Thanksgiving or day after, 12/24 or 12/25, 12/31 or 1/1)
  • RTO requests require manager approval
  • RN scrub color is navy blue
  • Free parking is available around campus
  • Former permanent employees of any AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being eligible
  • Local candidates are accepted — no radius rule applies, and the same rate applies for local travelers
