Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience.

Details

  • Float Pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units across a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
  • A home unit will be assigned on the first day of orientation; floating is required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
  • Units covered include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (23 beds, general and vascular surgery, 1:5–6 ratio), 5 South Neuroscience (33 beds, CVA/TBI/seizure/surgical neuro, 1:5–6 ratio), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (39 beds, oncology/palliative/ETOH withdrawal, 1:6 ratio), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (18 beds, general Med/Surg including COPD/CHF/sepsis/COVID, 1:5–6 ratio), 3 South Orthopedics (20 beds, joint replacements/fractures/fusions, 1:5–6 ratio), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (23 beds, urology/ENT/ortho/Med/Surg, 1:5–6 ratio)
  • Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
  • Shift times: 7a–7p or 7p–7a (12-hour shifts)
  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Scheduling is on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications: BLS and NIHSS
  • Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; if experience is strictly ICU, Cerner is required
  • Trauma/surgical unit experience of at least 1 year required for 6 North Trauma Surgical
  • Core clinical skills required vary by unit and include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG tubes, colostomy/ostomy care, PCA pumps, CVL dressing changes, foley care, restraints, and medication administration/documentation
  • Chemo administration experience highly preferred for 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (chemo certification required to administer)
  • Telemetry strip interpretation experience is a plus and should be noted if applicable
  • Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Required for consideration: 1 reference from charge nurse or above within the past 12 months, copy of certifications, SSN, and DOB (day and month)

Additional Information

  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists on each unit
  • Orientation for new travelers or those returning after 1+ year absence consists of 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours of on-unit training; rehire orientation is assessed based on last date worked
  • Previous permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked to start date) before being eligible to return as a traveler
  • Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific dates are not contractually guaranteed off prior to arrival
  • Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi video platform
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Scrub color: any color accepted
  • Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
