Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Progressive Care Unit position requiring strong vasoactive drip experience and the ability to manage high-acuity stepdown patients in an ICU-like environment.
Details
- Hospital-based PCU/Stepdown unit with 20 beds and an average daily census of 18 patients
- Functions more like an ICU — only one pressor drip per patient; additional pressors require ICU transfer
- Patient population includes post-rapid response, respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, post-op (GYN, GU, GI, thoracotomies, neuro, ortho), pre/post OB with complications (Pitocin), ranging in age from adolescent to geriatric
- Patient ratio of 1:3–4
- Night shift, 12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15), three shifts per week; 36 or 48 hours per week available
- Every other weekend required
- Floating required to a sister ICCU unit as needed
- Vasoactive drips used on unit include Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Neo
- Special equipment includes bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup, A-lines, BiPAP, chest tubes, and trachs (no vents on unit)
- EMR: Epic; Medication dispensing: Pyxis
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- PCU, DOU, IMC, or stepdown experience required
- Required skills: arterial line management, titrating vasoactive drips, telemetry monitoring and interpretation/management of dysrhythmias, IV insulin protocols, blood product administration, central line care/management, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, heparin protocols, CVA management, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management, and isolation precautions
- IV start experience required
- Conscious sedation experience required
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates are accepted
- No block scheduling — schedule is created by the nurse manager
- Hospital orientation is held during week one; traveler must be available for classes each day
- No RTO is permitted after booking, and requests cannot be negotiated onsite — call-offs or additional time off may result in contract cancellation
- Scrub colors: navy, white, or a combination of the two
- 2 professional references from a supervisor within the past 2 years required for consideration
