Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Oncology PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring high-acuity PCU experience and telemetry skills, with oncology experience preferred but not required.
Details
- Work in a 36-bed Medical Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care at an academic cancer hospital
- Unit serves adult patients with diagnoses including solid tumors, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology, with a high-acuity PCU focus and a smaller med/surg component
- Pediatric patients are occasionally present on the unit but are extremely rare and are typically managed by permanent staff — pediatric experience is not required
- PCU patient ratio is 1:3; med/surg telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (19:00–07:30); rotating day/night contracts may also be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination based on departmental needs
- Schedule is self-requested and then balanced and finalized by the department on a 4-week scheduling cycle
- Floating required to units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Equipment used includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanners, PCA pumps, and continuous bladder irrigation setups
- Epic EMR environment (academic cancer center)
Requirements
- Active OH RN license or a Compact RN license currently in hand
- Current certifications required: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of high-acuity PCU experience required
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
- Required skills include: telemetry/dysrhythmia interpretation, central line and PICC line care/management, port access, blood product administration, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), PCA pump management, cardiac drip management (titration and non-titration), heparin protocols, feeding tube care, tracheostomy management, CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, ABG interpretation, and IV insertion
- Preferred skills include: chemotherapy administration and monitoring, arterial line management, IV insulin/insulin drip titration, wound care/wound vac, phlebotomy, surgical drain management, and non-invasive airway management
- Two professional supervisory references from within the past 2 years required for consideration
- Full 7-year work history with all gaps explained required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of the first week on a Monday–Friday dayshift schedule, followed by a second week of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- All time-off and scheduling requests must be submitted at the time of initial application
- Candidates who have previously worked at this facility do not require a 30-day break between assignments to change representation (except Sterile Processing Techs)
