Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown (8SE) position at an acute care hospital in West Virginia, requiring strong med-surg stepdown experience and the ability to titrate drips and interpret telemetry strips.
Details
- 32-bed Stepdown unit within an acute care hospital setting
- Post-surgical thoracic and medical patient population
- Patient ratios of 1:3 for stepdown assignments and 1:4 for combo assignments (mix of stepdown and floor patients)
- RNs are required to titrate drips per MD orders with specific parameters; common drips include Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dopamine, Nitro, Esmolol, Heparin, and Lasix (no vasopressors)
- RNs must interpret and chart patient rhythm with each assessment every 4 hours, or more frequently during medication titration
- Unit uses centralized telemetry monitoring at the nurses station and in-room monitors; centralized telemetry interprets and places EKG strips into patient charts
- BiPAP and trach patients are managed on this unit; no ventilators
- Charting is performed in Epic (experience required)
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (Saturday, Sunday, Saturday rotation)
- Floating is rare on this unit
- No on-call or standby requirements
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Current NIHSS certification required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Strong med-surg stepdown experience required
- Ability to titrate drips and interpret telemetry strips required
- BSN not required
- Driver's license copy required for consideration
- COVID-19 vaccination required (2-dose Moderna or Pfizer series, or single-dose J&J); medical or religious exemptions may be submitted for review
Additional Information
- Unit is supported by 1 charge nurse and 3 house supervisors in-house at all times, plus 3–4 CNAs per shift
- 3-shift unit orientation provided
- Royal blue scrubs required
- Holiday coverage is required if the assignment falls on a holiday
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Any candidate who previously worked at a WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being considered
- Candidates cannot work within the WVU system for longer than 1 cumulative year; after reaching that mark, a 2-year break is required before returning

Units are traveler friendly, ratios 1:2 ICU, 1:3 SD, 1:5-6 Floor. Epic charting system, lots of resources and ancillary services available at most times. Easy to reach out to docs, docs are hit and miss on good communication like most places. Usually have float nurses in the ICU units to help out.
Cons
Common to get pulled as a traveler but wont pull ICU to anywhere but other ICU and SD.
