Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an Intermediate Care (IMC) position specializing in neurological and medical intermediate patients, requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and strong neuro stepdown skills.

Details

  • Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) in a hospital setting, with a census of up to 24 patients
  • Patient population includes a neuro-specialized intermediate care mix alongside general medical intermediate patients
  • Common neurological diagnoses include CVA, TBI, intracranial bleeds, aneurysms, craniotomy, spinal cord injury, seizure disorders, and post-TPA care
  • Patient ratio is 1:3–4 on both day and night shifts
  • 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15
  • Floating required to other intermediate areas (e.g., 6A, 5A PCTU, 5C Cardiac Intermediate) and critical care (ICU/Stepdown patients)
  • A minimum of 3 weekend shifts every six weeks is required
  • Contract length is 13–26 weeks
  • EMR: Epic; Medication dispensing: Pyxis; Communication: SBAR

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required; neuro experience strongly preferred
  • Neuro stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown, and telemetry experience required
  • Cardiac monitoring skills required: dysrhythmia interpretation and management, telemetry unit monitoring, and use of rapid response/code teams
  • Cardiovascular skills required: TR Band
  • Endocrine/metabolic skills required: IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips
  • GI skills required: feeding tube care and management
  • GU/renal skills required: continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and pre/post hemodialysis management
  • IV therapy skills required: blood product administration, central line care/management, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, and starting/maintaining IVs
  • Medication skills required: heparin protocols, PCA, thrombolytic agents, titration of cardiac drips, titration of vasoactive drips, and titration of levophed (LEVO)
  • Neurological skills required: aneurysms and repair, craniotomy, CVA, intracranial bleeds, lumbar drains, post-TPA care, pre/post neurosurgery, seizure disorders, spinal cord injury, substance withdrawal, and TBI
  • Respiratory skills required: ventilated patient care, chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac), BiPAP/CPAP management, HFNC, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care/management, and oxygen administration
  • Additional skills required: surgical drains, wound care/wound vac, and isolation precautions/PPE
  • Preferred certifications: CCRN, TNCC, and CPI
  • Preferred skills: triage, ICP monitoring, conscious sedation, and charge nurse experience

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Local candidates are accepted
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Orientation consists of 32 hours total: an 8-hour computer class, two shifts of unit orientation, plus initial hospital orientation
  • Scrub colors: any combination of navy blue and white
  • RTO after booking is not permitted and cannot be arranged on-site; call-offs are subject to a strictly enforced call-off policy
  • 2 professional references from a supervisor within the past 2 years are required for consideration
  • State Board of Nursing license verification and NURSYS verification required for consideration
