Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an AL or compact RN license.
Details
- Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
- A home unit will be assigned on the first day of orientation; floating to like units is required (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
- Units covered include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (23 beds), 5 South Neuroscience (33 beds), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (39 beds), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (18 beds), 3 South Orthopedics (20 beds), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (23 beds)
- Patient types vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizures, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology, palliative care, orthopedics, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg diagnoses such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, and renal failure
- Patient ratios are generally 1:5–6 depending on unit
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month required
- No on-call requirements
- EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
- Equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Scheduling runs on a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling; Smart Square is utilized
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
- Core skills expected across units include IV starts, wound care, trach care, chest tube management, NGT/PEG care, foley care, ostomy care, central line care, medication administration, and documentation
- Chemo administration certification preferred for oncology unit coverage
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for trauma surgical unit coverage
- Telemetry strip interpretation experience is a plus and should be elaborated upon if applicable
- Cerner EMR experience preferred
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- An SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of current certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months are required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
- Orientation includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours of on-unit training for travelers new to the facility or those who have been away for 1 or more years
- One major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy is expected; candidates will not be guaranteed time off around holidays prior to arrival
- RTO requests require manager approval and are subject to blackout periods
- Scrubs of any color are acceptable
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
